To maximize the effectiveness of your solar panels, opt for installations that are independent of the sun's movement. Current technology can store energy to allow you to use it throughout the day. This comes in handy for those that use electricity at night.

A panel system that tracks the sun is a great option if you can afford it. These systems can track the sun for optimum efficiency. The cost is higher, but the output will always be greater than static models.

Photovoltaic panels function best in areas where there's a minimum of five uninterrupted sunlight hours. People often see their pool's heating bill decreased from solar water heating.

Solar-powered cars can really reduce carbon-based pollutants; however, the technology hasn't been perfected yet. Other smaller solar-powered machines are becoming increasingly popular. Generators are perfect for black outs or camping, for example.

You should carefully consider each aspect of the contract, and you might want an attorney to look it over.

If solar panels are unaffordable, or you are not interested in committing long-term, you might think about leasing your solar energy system. This can reduce your payments dramatically while giving you the same benefits.

Think about converting your water heater to solar energy. Water heaters can consume up to 35% of your total energy consumption. With the upfront costs of solar water heaters being less than a full power system, more people are able to install these rather than full systems.

Avoid standing or walking on solar panels except when no other option is available. This could damage the expensive panel and prevent it from working. If you have to walk on them, stay away from the panel ends, as they are the most fragile.

Most solar installations are currently set up to save, or even earn, money. Whether you go solar at home or at your place of business, your investment will soon pay for itself and may even begin to generate money. Electricity that's produced and not needed for powering the home can be sold back to the utility company to obtain energy credits.

The department was presented with a commendation on Nov. 4 during a Hall of Fame banquet at Treetops Resort in Gaylord. Sarah Ouimette, the department’s clinical education coordinator, said the recognition is based on a history of voluntarily joining the Special Olympics medical crew at events throughout the region. For years, LSSU students have been helping at the organization’s state winter games in Traverse City. In addition, the university has hosted the Special Olympics aquatic championship and a regional basketball tournament. In January, it will host its first power-lifting competition. Ouimette said in any given school year, the athletic training program typically contains six to 15 students who donate their time to Special Olympics. “Over the years we’ve probably had 40-50 students that have gotten involved through the athletic training program,” said Ouimette, who is also an assistant professor. While helping at Special Olympic events, the students usually provide first aid to athletes or help keep them hydrated when necessary. Ouimette said some of the students are placed on call 24 hours a day during the events. LSSU’s work with Special Olympics began after Ouimette arrived in 2009. She said she was involved with the organization as an undergraduate student and was looking for ways to continue serving after she began teaching. Ouimette noted that, at first, students were a little tentative but have since come to enjoy the experience. “I think it’s just been a good overall learning experience for them,” she added. The department’s honor followed a formal nomination which was supported by Phil Becker, Special Olympics’ Area 35 coach and event coordinator for the LSSU/Area 35 Basketball Invitational, and by medical staff coordinator Pete Kelly.

Grandparents "She was a senior citizen who had lost her daughter to cancer and didn't have a grandchild. So she contacted the paper to say she would like to be a grandparent and was looking for a family." After the piece ran in the Huff Post, "all these people contacted her," she says. "They followed up and she had, like, 60 grandkids." Shannon is hopeful that someone -- preferably a pair -- will be tempted by the opportunity to mentor her children. "This is a big city, and there's got to be two people out there," she says. "I've never done online dating, but if you can meet your partner online, I think you can meet a family member through some other means than it being biological." The mom adds she and Alex aren't thinking of this as a fleeting or infrequent kind of arrangement; they want to find people who are ready to become truly embedded in their lives. "Be our kids' grandparents, come for Christmas, come on weekends, do the normal family stuff," she says. The couple's eldest child, a four-year-old boy, is in junior kindergarten. Their daughter just marked her first birthday. "They're both quite lovely little people," says the mom. Both Shannon and her husband hail from southern Ontario, but met while studying in Thunder Bay, and enjoy the northern wilderness. She's a teacher and social worker by profession, while Alex is a researcher in the education field. "We're educated but very down-to-earth folks," she says. Apart from the two children, they also have "two dogs and a cat and a goldfish," she says, "and are very active." Hiking is a passion, as is camping. Next weekend, they plan to take their kids for an overnighter in a yurt.
